Forty Plusser – Now what?

I am a Forty Plusser and I really question life a lot!  Am I at the midst of a midlife crisis?? Maybe.  I don’t really know. There are days that I hate my life and I feel trapped in a way…  Like… so this is life… really… I wish for more in life… But what??  What is wrong with me? Why am I so unhappy and not satisfied with my life anymore??

Middle age is not the beginning of decline. This is a time to reach for the highest in our selves. Middle age is a pause to re-examine what we have done and what we will do in the future. This is the time to give birth to our power.” For thousands of years, conscious cultures have celebrated life as a circular path with rites of passage and spiritual completions. Midlife is the most powerful because, at this turning point, we often feel betrayed, unfulfilled and face our mortality for the first time. Once we are able to think and live in circles rather than lines. “We are rewarded with passages that guide our consciousness in its spiritual development and greater awareness. When we experience life as a circle we are complete.”

Through renewed self-awareness we embrace the priorities of integrity, forgiveness and acceptance that empower us to realize greater wisdom, creativity and joy in our lives.

Why do my life feel so meaningless?  I was not always like this. I was really content. Now that my kids are all grown up, I feel even less needed.  I constantly have this “now what now?”days.  I question my marriage, my work… Am I ungrateful?  What is up with me?  I even google my “symptoms”.

According to Dr Google, midlife is a natural time to do a life audit. This is the season to do a performance review of your passion and your life’s productivity. You measure how well you have amassed money and acquired assets. You grade the success of your life on your position in the work place, your educational advancement, your character development, and the quality of your relationships, especially those in your family. Midlife is a time for reflection, regrouping, and recalibrating big goals.

A proper purpose precludes meaningless living. Yet, every day, men and some women meander into a midlife crisis. They think it is a release from responsibility, but midlife is meant to be a time of terrific transition, not terrible torture… but I feel tortured…

I must find a strategy to cope with it. At this point I have no strategy in place! But it’s worth pausing to think about whether a transition needs to be a “crisis,” or if it’s simply part of coming to terms with a change in your life. What a crisis for me!!!

  1. I don’t know what the strategy could be. but my understanding is that with each turn of a decade (age 30, 40 etc), we subconsciously review our lives and see if we have achieved what we had planned for. And we seem to have subconscious plans somehow. And we always we have not done everything we planned for. So, disappointment appears.
