Blah blah blah. Rather be content!

Okay Okay…  I’m a Forty Plusser…  I have experience…  I question life… a lot!  One of the dilemmas I question is the saying “the sky is your limit”.    How? I don’t agree 100%.  Some of us do have physical or financial limitations.  We don’t have equal opportunities.  Since childhood I heard the catchphrase “follow your passion”.   Millennials are taught that they are the best!   They literally have the world on their fingertips with the push of a button and they may have a delusional believe that life is always easy!

We all crave for overnight success, but in real life things happen slowly.    It’s nothing new that we are a “we want it all and we want it now!”generation. We as parents constantly tell our children that they could become anything if you work hard for it.  I beg to differ.  Not all dreams come true.  Not all people make it to the top. Our expectations of the future is sky-high and in many cases unreasonably so.   No one wants to be average in life, but reality knocks on the door…  Not all children will get A-grades in school.  Not all children will excel in sport.  The list goes on… We were raised with this unicorn vision in life that everyone is destined for something better in life…  NOT TRUE!

We all want the best for our children.  We all want the best for ourselves.  The question is: Is it really necessary to always be the best?  Not everyone can win at this game and end up as the winner.  It is actually okay to be “second best” in life. It is actually okay to be average.  Not all people will stand out amongst the crowd.  This constant urge to be the best can cause anxiety and makes you feel miserable.   Unfortunately in the real world things aren’t always easy.

I blame society that tells people that they can accomplish anything in life.  Some people in life do have hurdles that is impossible to overcome.  Life is not always in this order of school, study, work, success, fame.    I blame society for making me believe that you couldn’t be happy until you get what you always dreamt and hoped for.  You can’t always get what you want in life.  Really…  Life doesn’t work that way.  There comes a point in our lives that we must learn to be content.   Ambition is not always the Alpha and Omega.   We all have great aspirations for ourselves.   There comes a point in time that you have to accept that maybe having a normal 9 to 5 job is okay.  The reality is that a dream job also can become a nightmare… you never know!  Your marriage may end up in a divorce.  Not everyone is living their dream.  Not everyone is meant to be a boss or a leader.  That’s okay.  You will survive! I promise you!

I think that people have settled for instant gratification and have stopped chasing beauty.   Maybe we have unrealistic high goals.  These goals make you forget that the small goals in life that actually matter.   I firmly believe that we all have a purpose in life.

Wisdom: The key to being happy is knowing you have the power to choose what to accept and what to let go. Don’t let the silly little things steal your happiness. There is no cosmetic for beauty life happiness. The secret of being happy is accepting where you are in life and making the most out of everyday

  1. Acceptance is key to entering the “happy state ” or contentment state can be used interchangeably. However, most people have the hardest time to accept who they are or even understand who they really are – authentic self. That’s why you hear those sayings that really don’t mean anything to someone who doesn’t even know who they are. They won’t understand their limitations and, in essence, not be able to reach acceptance and in turn happiness. 😁

  4. Thanks for the thoughts! I think that another misconception people have is that we are supposed to always be happy in life. Unfortunately, if you are human then there will be times when we are not happy. This is also exacerbated by the Instagram/Facebook culture that pretty much shows all of the happy and wonderful things that others are doing and leaves out so much of the reality of real life. Then as people go through their Social Media, they see how everyone else is so happy and so put together and wonder, what is wrong with their life? Why do the struggle? Why aren’t things going their way? I might argue (if I may) and say the secret to being “content” is acceptance. And contentedness will ground us in reality and from there we can deal with our own selfishness and life’s misfortunes. While happiness is emotional with it’s ups and downs, True joy is found in the Lord and when we find our place in him, contentment and acceptance will follow.
