As a Forty Plusser woman I sometimes find it harder to get excited about life. Some weeks it feels like life is only about work, eat, sleep routine. No play! There are days that I look myself in the mirror and just see this face staring at me. Blue circles under my eyes. Feels like I have been hit by a train… maybe more than one train??! Getting out of bed to face the day’s challenges becomes more difficult. Urgh!! As an emergency procedure I pop energy drinks and vitamins, but that is of no use.

In your face moment: “Girl, you must chill. You need rest. You are heading to a total burnout!”.

At some point in your life you will experience a form of burnout. Burnout is a common experience for many people. As a student you may study too hard. Parents and business men and woman may have “too full” lives. Is it always worth it to strive for high achievement and perfectionism?? I don’t think so…

You may feel tired ALL the time. Maybe you are emotionally exhausted and feels moody and impatient more easily than you normally would. Everything is just too frustrating to deal with! You ask yourself: “Why can’t I deal with life as easily as before?”. When I am like this I feel like I have less to give. I actually have no interest in having fun. I also have less patience with people. Ever noticed than when you are super tired that you have an increasingly pessimistic outlook on life? Yeh, it is hard to “look on the brightside”if you feel burnout.

Burnout can roll over into anxiety and depression. You can feel that everyday is a “bad”day at work. You may also feel overwhelmed by all your responsibilities. Burnout can also lead to more severe illnesses such as heart attacks, high blood pressure and strokes. Your stress levels can start to “cost”you.

So how can you get out of this “sorry state”? Firstly a burnout must be addressed. Remember, you are not a failure. You must try to find ways to relax and enjoy life again. If necessary you can make a list for scheduling relaxing activities – and stick to it!!! Look after yourself by taking care of your eating and sleeping habits. What is important to you? What makes you happy? Make TIME!! you need some free time! Really!! You are not lazy. It is always nice to make a coffee date with a good friend or relative. Read a book. Go on vacation…if possible!

  1. Self-care is a must! Everyday carve out 10-15 minutes of self-care. Take a walk around the block, take a short nap at your desk at lunchtime. Socialize with a friend. If you have a partner date night once a month.
    Listen to soothing music. Take a personal day and go for a massage, get your hair done – do something small each day….
    Your soul will thank you!

      1. First, I am a woman and know the importance and need for self- care and second, I am a social worker and also know and teach the need for self- care!!🤗 I forgot to add read a good book, take a walk in nature, nap in your favourite chair…

  3. A very wise post, thanks for sharing your thoughts on this! It’s so easy to feel guilty about just doing nothing from time to time…but sometimes it is so necessary, for me at least. I always find that I have a long list of things that I ‘should’ be doing, but how many of them do I actually ‘want’ to do? It’s so important to make time to do the things you enjoy in life!

  7. The best place to do nothing is the beach. If you lay around and do nothing at home people judge you.
    If you say you went to the beach and did the same nothing people say cool you relaxed at the beach, how was it?
